Homework for September 7

I’m looking forward to working with all of you throughout this course and hope that you are excited for a productive and interesting semester.

As we start to examine different means of production, and the variety of tools available to you today, we will see that the concept of a printed text is not quite as precise as it used to be. One of your challenges for this course will be to navigate the shifting landscape of what print production means.

Our first homework will be a reading and written response that addresses some of these ideas through historical information and a unique format. The reading is entitles Wht is a Book? by Paul Chan. A full PDF can be found here. (You will need to scroll all the way down the page to find the correct PDF.)

You only need to write a couple of paragraphs. In doing so, think about the content of this book, and the way that it relates to the way that you are reading. How do you think the reading experience would be altered by a hard copy of the book? Or by the iPad/Kindle ebook? (If you feel like spending the $1.99 you can purchase the ebook file.) How do you feel about the design principals exercised here? Why would an artist make something so ugly?

We will also discuss some of these questions (and any questions you may have) in class next week. In the meantime, please post your response in the comments section of the Responses page of this site.
